Office View

I think it's always kind of fun to discover where fellow writers create their amazing stories. Many love coffee shops, but since I'm not a coffee drinker that holds no appeal for me. I prefer the solitfude of my own home. These days I mainly write my books on my lap top so I can be portable. With small kids, being portable is very important! I need to be near where the action is. But when I can, I go to the quiet of my office, carting the lap top with me. This is where my desk top computer sits waiting for me, too. I handle the majority of the business side of writing on my desk top. I like keeping that precious lap top as clutter free as possible! Plus there's something mental about keeping the lap top for writing only. I try not to play there. That's reserved for my main computer. My desk top computer also handles all of the email I receive, is the holding cell for all the web sites I maintain, and dutifully stores all the photos I take, plus is the home of my book covers, pub photos and all that good stuff.
One of the things I love about my office is the view I have. Especially this time of the year. It might not be a mountain top dusted with snow, or a lake dotted with sparkling gems courtesy of the sun, but to me, it's just as beautiful. It's a corn field. Yes, that's right. A corn field. I get to look over a vast field of corn and watch its progress throughout the growing season. I get to witness the first sprouts of spring, the first touches of yellow as the tassels emerge, and watch the deep, rich green of the leaves transform to a sea of gold that puts me in the mood for scarecrows and pumpkins. I love to watch the late afternoon/evening sun highlight the west side of the trees and throw shadows to the east and across the road. On days the weather cooperates, I love to open the window and be serenaded by a chorus of crickets chirping. They are usually accompanied by a little wind rustling through those drying corn stalks, making a beautiful autumn song. An extra bonus is the feel of the cooler breezes sneaking in and wrapping around me. Add a little music, a favorite candle, and I'm ready to write my fingers to the bone!
Do you have a favorite view that inspires you?

When I lived in Vail, I had a view of the Gore Range that inspired me. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a gardener or exterior decorator, so the view of our lawn here on the plains is singularly uninspiring, LOL!

Yours looks great, though -- well-manicured and friendly. :D

I love the view out of my office window. It's just the back yard - a half-dead tree, our privacy fence, the neighbor's landscaping (okay, now it sounds totally lackluster) but it reminds me that I've made the commitment to writing, and that I'm working towards my dream every time I sit down at my desk.

Your view rules!!!

Sherry,

Welcome to the world of blogging! I absolutely love the view outside your office window. The older I get, the more a quiet acreage somewhere away from the big city appeals to me.

I'm jealous! And I'm so happy your career is taking off!

Hugs!

Pam

Oh, and I forgot to mention - stop by Petticoats & Pistols sometime. It's right up your alley. :-)

Nice view. Although I think I like the one on the cover of Cowboy Fling better. lol

Everything you described sounds picture perfect... with the exception of those frickin' crickets. Those little suckers drive me crazy!

glad it's workin' for you though. :)
Happy writing!

I love your description of the view outside your window, Sherry. It sounded very poetic and relaxing.

Personally, I would love to have a little cabin (well-stocked and with all the amenities) nestled up in the mountains where I could write--but, since that's not in my budget, I settle for my home office. The view outside of a residential street isn't that spectacular, but I've filled the interior of the office with things I love. Antique furniture. Favorite family photographs and framed covers of favorite books. A Mary Engelbreit calendar (love her artwork!). My keeper shelf of well-loved books and reference books. And then I rotate my display of collections so nothing's too cluttered--I've got some collectible Barbie dolls, Beauty & the Beast dolls, Beanie Babies and romance dolls/ornaments. Favorite toys from childhood. Oh, and some of my grandmother's artwork. It sounds like a lot, but it's streamlined and homey and cool. It's a great place for me to write!

Wow. Some interesting comments. Just goes to show we all like different things. Although I'm with Julie on the little cabin nesteled away. Someday when I strike it rich that's one of the first things on the "to do" list!
I can't help it, I like the sounds of crickets outside my office window. But I draw the line at one chirping away in my bedroom at 1:00 AM when I'm trying to sleep. And Pam, we love our acreage in the country, course I grew up on a farm, but be warned. Acreages are a lot of work. However, I happen to think they are worth it! I couldn't live anywhere else but in the country.
